The Babies' Growth Chart

December 03rd 2015 - 37 Weeks - Babies are the size of Stalks of Swiss Chard! My pregnancy is considered full term, meaning our babies are likely to thrive after birth. Our twins spend these last weeks in preparation for the outside world... meaning careful refinement of the blink, suck, inhale, and exhale. Meconium, which I'll probably find in the first diaper, is accumulating in our babies' intestines. As I worry abou giving birth, I should consider what it's like for our little ones. During the journey out of my womb, our twins will produce more stress hormones than any other time in life.

December 03rd 2015 - 19.1 inches
6.3 lbs

November 26th 2015 - 36 Weeks - Babies are the size of Crenshaw Melons! Our babies' senses are continuing to improve - when light peeks through my (extremely) stretched belly, those tiny eyelids and irises blink and dilate. And, our twins can now recognize and react to simple songs... time to start practicing lullabies! Growth (at least inside my womb) is starting to slow, and I may notice our babies descend into my pelvis at the end of this month.

October 29th 2015 - 32 Weeks - Babies are the size of Jicamas! Our twins' energy is surging, thanks to the formation of white fat deposits beneath the skin. Our babies are also settling into sleep and waking cycles, though - as I've already noticed - they don't coincide with my own. Also this month, all five senses are finally functional, and their brains and nervous systems are going through major developments.

October 01st 2015 - 28 Weeks - Babies are the size of Chinese Cabbages! I should let Zak put his ear on my belly - he might be able to pick up our babies' heartbeats (no stethoscope required). Inside the womb, the formation of tiny capillaries are giving our twins a healthy pink glow. Our babies' also soaking up my antibodies, getting the immune system ready for life outside the womb. Eyes are forming, and our twins will soon perfect the blink - perfect for batting those freshly grown lashes.

September 03rd 2015 - 24 Weeks - Babies are the size of Ears of Corn! I better watch what I say -- our babies' are now able to hear outside noise from down in the womb. Studies show that our twins would most likely find gentle music and my own voice most soothing. Their nipples are starting to sprout, and their little faces are fully formed. And our babies' are starting to settle into sleep cycles, snoozing 12 to 14 hours a day. It shouldn't be hard to figure out when -- I just need to pay attention to those kicks as they start and stop.

August 13th 2015 -
 21 Weeks -
Babies are the size of Bananas! Our babies' gulp down several ounces of amniotic fluid each day, both for hydration and nutrition, and to practice swallowing and digesting. And, these days, those taste buds actually work! Studies show that after, babies are most interested in tastes they've already experienced through amniotic fluid. Meaning, I should think about what I want our future children to eat as I prepare my lunches now.

August 06th 2015 -
 20 Weeks -
Babies are the size of Cantaloupes! Our twins' digestive system is busy creating meconium (a tarry black substance made of swallowed fluid, digestive secretion, and dead cells), which will fill the first diaper after birth. And, speaking of the diaper situation... our babies' genitals are now fully formed!

August 06th 2015 - 6.5 inches

July 30th 2015 - 19 Weeks - Babies are the size of Mangoes! Vernix caseosa, a greasy white substance made of lanugo, oil, and dead skin cells now coats our babies' skin, shielding it from the amniotic fluid. (Picture yourself after a nine-month bath, and the need for protection makes sense). I might actually get to see the vernix at birth, especially if our twins are premature.

July 30th 2015 - 6 inches

July 23rd 2015 - 18 Weeks - Babies are the size of Sweet Potatoes! Our babies have become amazingly mobile (at least compared to me), passing the hours yawning, hiccuping, rolling, twisting, kicking, punching, sucking, and swallowing. And the twins are finally big enough that I'll be able to feel stronger movements soon.

July 23rd 2015 - 5.6 inches

_________________________________________________________________________________July 16th 2015 - 17 Weeks - Babies are the size of Onions! The skeletons of the twins are hardening, changing from rubbery cartilage to bone, and fat is finally accumulating around them. The umbilical cords are getting thicker and stronger, and those little fingers and toes are now topped by one-of-a-kind pints!

July 09th 2015 - 16 Weeks -
Babies are the size of Avocados! I have to watch what I say now... tiny bones forming in the twins' ears mean that they can now pick up my voice. Eyebrows, lashes, and hair are starting to fill in, and taste buds are forming. Genitals are fully developed now, so an ultrasound could pick up their genders (which we've already done!).

July 02nd 2015 - 15 Weeks - Babies are the size of Naval Oranges! Continuing the march towards normal proportions, the twins' legs now out measure their arms. And, finally, all four limbs have functional joints. Our babies are squirming and wiggling like crazy down inside my womb.

Babies are the size of Lemons! Our babies are busy thumb sucking, toe wiggling, making urine, and breathing amniotic fluid as their livers, kidneys, and spleens continue to develop. Lanugo (thin, downy hair) is growing all over each of their bodies for warmth.

June 04th 2015 - 11 Weeks - Babies are the size of Limes! Our babies are currently enjoying a 1:1 ratio between body and head, and have skin so transparent that blood vessels show right through. But, fingers and toes are no longer webbed, and hair follicles, tooth buds, and nail beds are forming - setting up a significantly more attractive future.

June 04th 2015 - 1.6 inches
.25 oz

May 28th 2015 - 10 Weeks - Babies are the size of Prunes! With bones and cartilage starting to form and vital organs beginning to function, the twins are making major progress. Their body lengths will almost double in the next three weeks, and arm joints are now working (soon, legs will too).

May 28th 2015 - 31 - 42 mm

_____________________________________________________________________________

May 21st 2015 - 9 Weeks - Babies are the size of Green Olives! The twins have now officially graduated to fetus-hood. Adding to the excitement, a Doppler ultrasound device might be able to pick up their beating hearts. With basic physical structures in place and increasingly distinct facial features, the babies are starting to look like... well... babies!

May 21st 2015 - 22 - 30 mm

May 14th 2015 -
 8 Weeks -
Babies are the size of Raspberries! The twins are growing like mad, putting on about a millimeter everyday and continuing to straighten out in the trunk. Though I can't feel it yet, they are moving their little arms, legs, and (now slightly) webbed fingers and toes like crazy.

May 14th 2015 - 14 - 20 mm

May 07th 2015 -
 7 Weeks -
Babies are the size of Blueberries! The twin's brains - both hemispheres! - are growing fast, generating about 100 new cells every minute. Arms and legs are emerging as joints start to form, and a permanent set of kidneys (their third!) is now in place.

May 07th 2015 - 13 mm

_________________________________________________________________

April 30th 2015 - 6 Weeks - Babies are the size of Sweet Peas! Growing like crazy, the twins are starting to sprout eyes, ears, nose, cheeks, and chin. Those little hands and feet - still webbed like paddles - might wiggle by week's end. Their hearts are beating (almost twice as fast as yours!), and blood is starting to circulate.

April 30th 2015 - 2 - 5 mm

April 23rd 2015 -
 5 Weeks -
Babies are the size of  Apple Seeds! My two embryos (looking kind of like tadpoles) are starting to form major organs (heart, kidney, liver, stomach) and systems (nervous, circulatory, digestive). The twin's presence in my uterus triggers production of hCG (the hormone detected by pregnancy tests)... which triggers production of other hormones like estrogen and progesterone... which trigger all the great symptoms I've been noticing (being nauseous, tired, and hungry!).

April 23rd 2015 - 1.5 - 2.5 mm

_________________________________________________________________________________

April 16th 2015 -
 4 Weeks -
Babies are the size of Poppyseeds! Now safe in my womb, the ball of cells (blastocyst) splits in two, becoming the embryo and the placenta. The amniotic sac and fluid are forming around each baby, and will act as a cushion for the next eight months.

April 16th 2015 - .5 - 1 mm
